The following terms outline how the content of the Etteilla Foundation website https://etteilla.org can be freely re-used to support art, promote culture and advance research.
The Etteilla Foundation is committed to help create an inclusive and sustainable world where everyone has the opportunity to reach their full potential which is why, regardless of the following terms, the Etteilla Foundation content cannot be used to promote any malevolent activity including the promotion of hate, violence, racism, revisionism, sex-traffiking, disinformation and unlawful activities.
Content License
The Etteilla Foundation wishes to encourage the use of our collection to help disseminate knowledge about the rich cultural heritage of playing cards, their rich art and symbolism.
Accordingly for the decks which are in the public domain (usually created before 1923) we are making our cards scans and deck renderings available under the Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License (CC BY-NC 4.0) license. Similarly the information on this site is equally available under the Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License (CC BY-NC 4.0).
Note this license only covers the imagery and information related to the Etteilla collection and does not apply to our logo, name and other branding elements
See below for a non-exhaustive list of non-commercial activities covered under this license that do not need to request permission for usage (but we would love to hear about it!).
Upon request, we are willing to allow the use of our content for commercial usage that is inline with the Foundation mission as outlined below.
Last but not least, we have an API that allows you to include our content in your site with less restrictive terms of service.
Requesting commercial use permission
Etteilla Foundation is committed to support research and cultural education and is generally willing to provide commercial use permission free of charge for the following case (list non-exhaustive):
- Research paper in a paid journal.
- History books.
- Lectures.
- Press articles.
- Youtube Videos with ads, affiliate links, product/service promotion or any other form of monetization scheme. Non-monetized videos are considered covered by our re-use license.

Commercial activities
For the avoidance of doubt, the Etteilla Foundation considers the following to be commercial activities (this list is not exhaustive):
- A monetized video including ads or product promotion.
- A monetized or promotional social media post.
- An individual's website or blog that is used as a platform to promote or conduct commercial activities - For example, to directly sell products and services such as playing cards decks, tarot reading, or monetize through the use of affiliate links.
- Any commercial organization's website or blog, including trading arms of charities.
- Freely distributed leaflets or merchandise that promote goods or services.
- Corporate stationery or any business communications such as annual reviews and ads.
- Free-entry events, presentations or lectures promoting a product or a service.
- Displays in public places offering or promoting a product or service, such as use in a shop, restaurant, hotel, public bar or property showroom
Non commercial activities
The Etteilla Foundation considers the following activities to be non-commercial activities that are compatible with our CC BY-NC 4.0 license and the Foundation mission. If your planned usage falls into one of these categories, you don’t need to request permission and are free to re-use our content with proper attribution. We would love to hear about it and potentially promote it.
Note the following list is not exhaustive so feel free to contact us in case you feel your use-case quality for using our content.
- Use in non-promotional social media posts
- Use in educational videos (e.g on YouTube, Vimeo, TikTok etc) as long as they are free of ads, promotion, affiliate links and other monetization schemes.
- Use in free-entry, educational lectures or in activities promoting free-entry lectures.
- Use in Charities and non-profits documentation.
- One-off classroom use.
- Reproduction within a thesis document submitted by a student at an educational establishment. An electronic version of the thesis may be stored online by the educational establishment as long as it is made available at no cost to the end user.
- Use in websites as long as they are informational, academic or research-oriented and do not link to any commercial activity.
- Display within a free-entry public space, including museums and galleries, as long as the use is not promoting a product or a service.
- Educational and classroom use within an educational establishment or in the course of formal instruction.
Limitations
The Etteilla Foundation can't guarantee that your use of any content found on our website will not infringe any third-party copyright or other intellectual property rights. It is your responsibility to judge whether any of the content may need additional clearances for your intended use and to obtain them.
